Question & Answer
Question
What is the size limitation for all IBM® Rational® ClearCase® type managers on Microsoft® Windows®, Linux® and UNIX®?
Answer
A type manager is used to manage the contents of element versions.
For example, a single source data container holds all the versions of an element of type text_file_delta.
The size limit on the amount of data a type manager can process is 2 gigabytes (GB).
The 2 GB limit is imposed on the VOB data containers for cleartext, source, and derived objects.
Note: The 2 GB limit is true for all text and binary type managers, even in a schema 54 VOB.
When this limit is met for a given text container, you must create a new element or use cleartool chtype to change the element to use a binary type manager, since the storage of binary containers is managed differently than text.
Note: A new container is created for each version of a binary file, while a text file only has a single container, thus the limitation for the text file type managers is a cumulative 2 gigabytes per element, while the limitation for the binary type manager is 2 gigabytes per version.
Refer to the chtype section of IBM Rational ClearCase Command Reference, or run cleartool man chtype from command line.
Note: The 2 gigabyte (GB) limitation on all text and binary type managers exist in ClearCase versions 2002.05.00 and 2003.06.00; however, this limitation was partially lifted as of ClearCase 7.0 which supports files greater than 2 GB for particular type managers.
