Troubleshooting
Problem
Attempts to create or rename an existing IBM Rational ClearCase UCM project results in the error "The name has illegal characters".
Symptom
As of ClearCase 2002.05.00 and later, creating a project with a space in the project name yields the error:
C:\>cleartool rename project:proj1@\pvob1 project:"proj1 one"@\pvob1
cleartool: Error: The name has illegal characters.
On Windows, the error from the graphical interface will display:
Cause
In previous Rational ClearCase UCM versions, a space could be used because there was a project title and a project name, which were separate entities.
The name entered in the cleartool mkproject or cleartool rename command was actually the project title, which got converted with underscores to eliminate any spaces for the project name.
Example:
M:\sylim_testmerge_main\sylim_pvobZ:\projects>cleartool lsproject
11-Sep-02.11:56:35 project_with_space_21347 sylim projman "project with space"
where
- project_with_space_21347 is the project name, and
- "project with space" is the project title
The project title is no longer used in ClearCase UCM, which is why spaces in the name are no longer allowed.
When spaces exist in the name, they are considered illegal characters as specified in the above error.
Resolving The Problem
When naming a UCM project, use a name that does not contain any spaces.
Note: This functionality is applicable when naming UCM projects, streams, and folders (in Project Explorer); these objects cannot contain spaces in the name.
