Snapshot views have a view root and a view storage directory

Question & Answer

Question

What are the view root and view storage directories used when working in an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® snapshot view?

Answer

This technote provides a brief outline on what the view root and view storage directories are when working in an ClearCase snapshot view.

The information contained in this technote serves as a supplement to the information contained in the IBM Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide.

Each snapshot view has both a view (root) directory and a view storage directory.

The difference between a snapshot view's root directory and storage directory is:

  • The view root is the physical working directory for manipulating ClearCase data or adding new elements to source control
  • The view storage directory tracks information about what files are loaded and checked out within the view

Note: The view root uses a host’s native file system to hold versions of file and directory elements that have been loaded from a VOB.

When creating a snapshot view you are required to specify a directory for Rational ClearCase to load copies of files and directories, which is the view root. You are also prompted to specify a path for the view configuration and database files to be created; the view storage.

Generally, in full ClearCase, the view root is created on the client host, while the view storage can either be created locally also or on a remote view server.

A collocated snapshot view is when both the view root and view storage directories exist in the same location or path.

Note: When working on a mobile computer, such as a laptop, the view root should be put on the mobile device, while the view storage should be created on a non-mobile view server.

The view root is used for working on source controlled and view private data.

Note: This location contains a view.dat file that is created by ClearCase and should not be modified or removed.

The view storage directory is for ClearCase administrative purposes only. Do not modify anything in it.

For every 1,000 elements loaded into the view root, ClearCase uses about 400 KB of disk space for the view storage directory.
