ClearCase does not appear to be running on this computer

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains why the IBM® Rational® ClearCase® Doctor utility reports, []ClearCase does not appear to be running on this computer[], after a new client installationl on Microsoft® Windows®.

Symptom

ClearCase Doctor is reporting the following after a new client installation:

ClearCase does not appear to be running on this computer

Cause

There are various causes of this issue that include the following:

  1. The Windows primary group of the ALBD account (clearcase_albd by default) is not set to the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default).

  2. In an Active Directory environment, the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default) was created as a Domain Local Group on the Domain Controller rather than a Domain Global (or Universal) group.

How might you happen into this situation?

Scenario:

A ClearCase release area was created on an Active Directory Domain Controller by running the site prep utility.

Note:
The siteprep utility will complete without errors despite the ClearCase account group being created as a Domain Local Group because the siteprep is run on the Active Directory Controller itself. Also creating VOB and View storage locations, as well as creating VOB's and views on the Domain Controller will succeed because ClearCase is running locally on the server from which the server process group account is configured.

Symptoms of problem:

  • Attempts to stop the ALBD service on the client from the ClearCase Properties window will result in a time out waiting for the Atria Location Broker service to stop. The GUI reports Stop is still pending and stays in this state indefinitely.
  • Attempts to stop and start the ALBD service from the command line results in the following errors:
    C:\>net stop albd
The Atria Location Broker service is stopping....
The Atria Location Broker service could not be stopped.

    C:\>net start albd
The requested service has already been started.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182.

  • The Application Event Viewer log reports the following:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: ClearCase
    Event Category: ALBD
    Event ID:      1024
    Date: 2/6/2006
    Time: 1:49:19 PM
    User: Domain\clearcase_albd
    Computer:      winxp
    Description:
Albd(PID): Error: albd_server must run in the clearcase group
    Data:
    0000: b8 05 00 00

Verify the problem:

Follow the below steps to further verify this problem.
  1. Logon as the ALBD user account on the client host and run creds. (C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearCase\etc\utils\creds). The creds command will not return the Domain Local Group at all. Review technote 1221403 for more information about the creds utility.

  2. Logon to the Domain Controller and verify the group type setting for the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default). Valid account types include either Global or Universal.

Resolving The Problem

Solution 1

Set the primary group of the ALBD account (clearcase_albd by default) to the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default) on the domain controller.

Note: Review the Windows operating system help for assistance.

HINT: On the domain controller, open the properties of the ALBD account and click the "Member Of" Tab. The Member Of list displays the groups in the local domain and any universal groups to which the currently selected object belongs. Highlight the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default) and click Set Primary Group to set the Primary Group.

Restart the Windows client and ClearCase should work as expected.

Solution 2

  1. Delete the ClearCase Server Process group (clearcase by default) on the Domain Controller.

  2. Create a new Global or Universal group for the ClearCase Server Process group.

  3. Remove the release area.

  4. Run siteprep to create a new release area using the new group created in the process.

  5. Reinstall ClearCase on all machines.
