Error description

  • ERROR DESCRIPTION:
CICS is taking a large transaction dump that will not fit in a
whole DFHDMPA or DFHDMPB . And when the active datset (DFHDMPA
or DFHDMPB) fills up, CICS switches to the other dataset.
Andafter every switch, there is automation that issues an EXEC
CICS SET DUMPDS SWITCHNEXT so that CICS always switches to the
other dataset when the active fills up.
    .
This situation leads to the following messages being issued
    repeatedly:
    .

    set DFHDMPA opened.
    00.17.35 STC04535 +DFHDU0305I PRDCICS Transaction Dump Data
    set switched to DFHDMPA
    .
What is going on is that when a transaction dump dataset fills
up while a transaction dump is in progress, CICS restarts the
transaction dump from the beginning after switching to the
other dump dataset. If that transaction dump doesn't even fit
in a whole dump dataset then CICS will switch to the other and
start the transaction dump again. This goes on and on forever
if there is automation to consantly reset the DUMPDS to
    SWITCHNEXT after each switch.

Local fix

  • Allocate large transaction dump datasets

    *                      being reset.                            *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
A transaction has used a number of large containers and
attempts to take a transaction dump. If the dump datasets are
too small and AUTOSWITCH is enabled, CICS disables AUTOSWITCH
and switches to use the alternate dump dataset.

If automation is used to reenable AUTOSWITCH for dump datasets
then it is possible for the transction to loop forever because
    of the resetting of AUTOSWITCH.

Problem conclusion

  • DFHDUXD has been changed so that it will only attempt to dump
twice, ignoring AUTOSWITCH the second time.

DFHDEFDS has been updated to change DUMP A and DUMP B datasets
to be created with 25 cylinders.

CICS Transaction Server for z/OS Version 4 Release 2 System
Definition Guide, SC34-7185-01 has been altered. The sample
job control statements within "Defining the transaction dump
sets" have had the cyclinder sizes changed to being (CYL,(25)).
