Error description

  • Your CICS region starts up and you see the following
informational message in the job output:
    .
DFHHC0102I applid CICS failed to register with the z/OS
               Health Checker: code( X'00000003')
               reason( X'00000008') response( X'0000081C').
    .
You attempt to investigate the issue and look at internal trace
for the region, and find the following exception trace is
    written when this occurs:
    .
    XS FE04 XS** *EXC* FUNCTION(REGISTER_TO_HEALTH_CHECKER)
                        RESPONSE(EXCEPTION) REASON(CSVDYNEX_FAILED)
                        ESM_RESPONSE(8) ESM_REASON(81C)
    .
Because this comes out of the XS (Security) domain, and because
the trace indicates that the ESM (External Security Manager)
returned the response and reason, you logically focus your
efforts on what may have happened in RACF (or your current ESM.)
    .
The trace is misleading, as this is not a security related
issue, and no calls were made to the ESM in this case. The
DFHHC0102I message documentation also does not indicate what
MVS macro was issued, and where to look for these
code/reason/response combinations. The true cause was a failure
to load one of the health checker modules, but the
documentation and trace are not adequate to help you determine
the course of action to take. This APAR is being opened to
correct the misleading trace entry and to correct the missing
    documentation items.

CICS Message DFHHC0102 returns error code, reason and response
values, but it is not clear what these values are or where they
are documented. Also, if CICS issues exception trace entry
XS FE04 then it refers to esm_response and esm_reason values
when these are not always applicable to an External Security
    Manager.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been changed to specify interface_response and
    interface_reason (rather than esm_response and esm_reason) on
    the calls for healthchecker operations.
DFHHC0102 has been changed to include the following additional
    guidance:
"The code for the failure denotes the macro call that has
    failed. 1 = GETMAIN, 2 = IARV64, 3 = CSVDYNEX, 4 = HZSCHECK.
Depending upon the failure code, refer to the following:
The GETMAIN macro is described in the z/OS MVS Programming:
    Authorized Assembler Services Reference EDT-IXG.
The IARV64 macro is described in the z/OS MVS Programming:
    Authorized Assembler Services Reference EDT-IXG.
The CSVDYNEX macro is described in the z/OS MVS Programming:
    Authorized Assembler Services Reference ALE-DYN.
The HZSCHECK macro is described in the IBM Health Checker for
    z/OS Users Guide."
