PK09088: CICS GOES SOS ABOVE THE 16MB LINE DUE TO TIOA STORAGE IN THE SMTP SUBPOOL IN ECDSA.

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• DFHSM0133 CICS is under stress (short on storage above 16MB).
  Turning on the Storage Freeze option may lead to an SOS
  condition above the line (EDSA) due to TIOA storage building
  up in the SMTP subpool in the ECDSA.
  
  CSFE DEBUG,TRANID=tran,STGFRZ=ON can be used to keep storage
  allocated in CICS until the end of the transaction.  This can
  be helpful for debugging.  The problem is that TIOAs may
  build up and lead to an SOS condition.  The
  TCTE_STORAGE_FREEZE bit is the x'10' at TCTTE+D5.
  
  This APAR is being taken so the problem can be investigated
  further.  It looks like there is no FREEMAIN_ALL_TERMINAL
  call if the principal facility is an MRO session.  For this
  type of facility, DFHZISP will release all the TIOA storage
  as part of the ZISP FREE_DETACH,IMPLICIT call.  DFHZISP loops
  around freeing all TIOAs around label TCZIF484.  However,
  each freemain (label DOFREE) is a conventional freemain
  and storage manager will freeze it as TCTE_STORAGE_FREEZE is
  still on.
  

Local fix

• Increase EDSALIM or turn off STGFRZ option with
  CSFE DEBUG,TRANID=tran,STGFRZ=OFF

  When CSFE STGFRZ=ON is issued for a transaction that runs on a
  MRO session, the terminal storage that has been allocated for
  that transaction does not get freed at end of task.
  These TIOAs can build up in ECDSA and cause a Short on Storage
  condition.
  

Problem conclusion

• DFHZISP has been altered so TCTE_STORAGE_FREEZE is turned off
  before TIOA storage is freed at session disconnect time.
  
  The CICS Transaction Server for z/OS CICS Supplied Transactions
  manual, Version 3 Release 1 ( SC34-6432-01 ), will be updated in
  the section about Storage Freeze for the CSFE transaction.
  After the sentence "The frozen storage is not freed until the
  end of the transaction." will be added "Terminal storage may
  be freed before the end of a transaction by the EXEC CICS FREE
  command."
