    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When starting a CAS with SPCF=N *
    * specified or defaulted, you may *
    *                      receive ABEND S0C4 at +X'0676' in       *
    *                      module BBM0SD20 (MSD20 - PGEXEC GSI     *
    *                      Service Function).                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: After applying the PTF that resolves this *
    * APAR, all CMASes and CASes must be recycled *
    * to pick up the new code. Note that the *
    * restarts do not need to be done at the same *
    *                 time.                                        *
    ****************************************************************
       When a CAS initializes, Component Initialization Modules
    (CIMs) for each component are invoked by calling the PGEXEC
    service to attach a subtask and execute the desired program.
    BBM0SD20 accepts a PGXB (Program Execution Block) from the
    caller, ATTACHes a subtask executing program BBM0SD21 (MSD21 -
    PGEXEC Task Initialization Driver) and WAITs on an ECB in the
    PGXB which will be POSTed by MSD21 when the subtask has started,
    but before passing control to the program identified in the
    PGXB. When MSD20 resumes, it loads the return code placed in
    the ECB by MSD21.
       After POSTing MSD20, MSD21 passes control to the program
    identified in the PGXB. If the started program returns quickly
    enough (i.e. the SPCF CIM returns immediately if SPCF=N is in
    effect), the subtask may terminate before MSD20 is redispatched.
    During termination of the subtask, the PGXB storage is released,
    so when MSD20 attempts to load the return code from the ECB, an
    S0C4 abend results.

Problem conclusion

  • When control returns to BBM0SD20 (MSD20) following the WAIT,
    a storage validation check will be made to see that the ECB is
    accessible to the calling task. If not, the return code will
    not be loaded by MSD20. Instead a code of X'0F' (Invalid ENB)
    will be returned.
