APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
The session manager will attempt to call getConnection() up to 3 times if there is a database problem. This has been the case for a very long time (since at least V6.1). In this APAR session manager will provide a custom property that allows users to select the number of getConnection() retry attempts. For example, 0 retry attempts upon a database connection failure.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server full * * profile version 7.0, 8.0 and 8.5 * * customers using database session * * persistence. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The way the session manager retries * * database connections may affect * * application performance. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** If the session manager encounters a StaleConnectionException when connecting to a database, it will retry the connection twice.
Problem conclusion
The session manager has added a new custom property, StaleConnectionRetry, to allows users to select the number of connection retry attempts. For example, when StaleConnectionRetry = 0, the session manager will attempt a connection only once, with no retry attempts. The default value is StaleConnectionRetry = 2. In other words, the session manager will retry a connection twice if the first attempt fails. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 7.0.0.33, 8.0.0.9 and 8.5.5.2.
