Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V8.0 and V8.5                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An ABEND378/ABENDS378 occurs when *
    *                      starting a WebSphere address space      *
    * which is configured to use WOLA. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    During WebSphere Optimized Local Adapters (WOLA)
    initialization, a race condition exists where multiple servers
    within a WebSphere daemon group try to create a control block
    used by the server instances within that group. The servers
    which do not 'win' the race must free the storage containing
    the control block that they tried to initialize. The storage
    is released twice, and the second release results in an
    ABEND378/ABENDS378 from the MVS STORAGE service.
    The application server instances which receive the ABEND will
    terminate. The server instances can be restarted and will
    not ABEND since the race condition no longer exists.

Problem conclusion

  • Code was added to prevent the ABEND378/ABENDS378 during WOLA
    initialization.

    APAR PI08864 is currently targeted for inclusion in Fix Packs
    8.0.0.9 and 8.5.5.2 of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
