PI22242: PDB SYMBOL FILES SHOULD BE SHIPPED ALONG WITH DLL FILES ON MICROSOFT WINDOWS OPERATING SYTEMS

Error description

  • WebSphere Application Server ships multiple native library
DLLs on Microsoft Windows operating systems but does not
save or ship PDB symbol files (these are produced by the Windows
compiler). IBM Java ships with PDB files and WebSphere
Application Server should too. The PDB files are required to
create sensical native stack traces for tools such as UMDH for
native memory leak detection and windbg for crash analysis.
This helps prove the causes of these issues (while usually
caused by third party libraries, without PDBs, we cannot prove
that except through complex isolation techniques).

Without the presence of PDB symbol files some data on a stack
    trace might be missed.

Problem conclusion

  • Shipped the PDB symbol files of WebSphere Virtual Enterprise
native files to ensure entire stack trace on Microsoft Windows
    operating sytems will be displayed.
