Error description
Web Applicatons that are using openJPA in WAS v8.5.5.3 can break with "org.apache.openjpa.persistence.ArgumentException: Cannot manipulate identity of type <type>". Such applications may work with WAS v8.5.5.2, but if the environment is updated to WAS v8.5.5.3 such error may occur. Local fix
The cascade-persist option in the persistence unit default has something to do with this issue. If the option will be removed all works fine.

Problem conclusion
