Error description
HTTP Requests that are received by the control region when the adjunct region is available but the servant is unavailable are not immediately rejected as specified by control_region_dreg_on_no_srs=1 If the adjunct region is disabled and the servant region is not available requests are handled as expected. The problem is that a primitive method is invoked to obtain the number of currently active servants. This method does not exclude the Adjunct from the count. The adjunct region is really a type of a servant. So, in the code that would trigger the auto-pause listener code when the servant terminated, it still detected an active servant--the adjunct.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V8.5 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: WebSphere Application server for z/OS * * configured with an adjunct may not * * engage auto-pausing of listeners. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** The automatic pausing of the listeners within the controller can be enabled with the control_region_dreg_on_no_srs environment variable. When a WebSphere Application Server for z/OS server is configured to use an adjunct region, the adjunct is mistakenly included in the count of active servants within the auto-pause and auto-resume code. In a server with a failed servant, but active adjunct, it may appear that a servant is available to process work and thus avoid triggering the auto-pause of the listeners.
Problem conclusion
Code has been modified in the auto-pause / auto-resume processing to exclude the existence of an adjunct when considering to trigger an action. APAR PI41788 is currently targeted for inclusion in Fix Packs 8.5.5.7 of WebSphere Application Server V8.5.
