Error description
When installing or updating a large WebSphere Application Server application on an AIX system, file upload might fail with the following exception: Caused by: java.net.SocketException: Invalid argument at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketSetOption(PlainSocketImpl.java:59 7) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.setOption(PlainSocketImpl.java:340) at java.net.Socket.setTcpNoDelay(Socket.java:894) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.openServer(HttpClient.java:449) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.openServer(HttpClient.java:551) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.<init>(HttpClient.java:227) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.New(HttpClient.java:313) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.New(HttpClient.java:332) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getNewHttpClient( Htt pURLConnection.java:1000) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.plainConnect(HttpURL Connection.java:936) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.connect(HttpURLConne ction.java:854) at com.ibm.ws.management.filetransfer.client.FileTransferClientImpl .connectToServer(FileTransferClientImpl.java:2885) at com.ibm.ws.management.filetransfer.client.FileTransferClientImpl .openConnection(FileTransferClientImpl.java:2797) at com.ibm.ws.management.filetransfer.client.FileTransferClientImpl .uploadFileInternal(FileTransferClientImpl.java:548)

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Upload of large file fails with * * java.net.SocketException: Invalid * * argument * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Upload of large file to WebSphere Application Server on AIX fails with java.net.SocketException: Invalid argument
Problem conclusion
The file transfer client reuses a connection repeatedly, which can cause a buffer exhaustion in the server-side AIX TCP-IP stack, resulting in the server side resetting the connection and returning the above exception. The client is updated to close the connection occasionally so the problem no longer occurs. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 7.0.0.43, 8.0.0.13, 8.5.5.11 and 9.0.0.2 Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for delivery information: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg27004980
Temporary fix
Install or update the application from the same host that the server process resides on. In this case, the file is copied directly and the https upload process is not used.
