Error description

  • The following block in the OpenJPA's
    ConfigurationImpl.loadGlobals() method contains:

    // let system properties override other globals
    try {
    fromProperties(new HashMap(
    AccessController.doPrivileged(
    J2DoPrivHelper.getPropertiesAction())));

    This retrieves a Properties object from
    System.getProperties(), which is passed to HashMap's ctor.
    The ctor interacts with an enumerator associated with the
    Properties object to populate the new HashMap instance.
    However, if another thread mutates the JVM's System
    Properties, it can result in a
    ConcurrentModificationException as observed below:

    Caused by: java.util.ConcurrentModificationException
    at java.util.Hashtable$Enumerator.next(Hashtable.java:1256)
    at java.util.HashMap.putAllForCreate(HashMap.java:566)
    at java.util.HashMap.<init>(HashMap.java:310)
    at
    org.apache.openjpa.lib.conf.ConfigurationImpl.loadGlobals(Co
    nfigurationImpl.java:189)

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, code has been added to OpenJPA to ensure that
    method ConfigurationImpl.loadGlobals() is property synchronized
    to avoid potential concurrent modifications.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Levels (Fix Packs) 8.5.5.12 and 9.0.0.3 of WebSphere
    Application Server versions 8.5.5 and 9.0.0, and fix pack
    17.0.0.1 for WebSphere Application Server Liberty. Please refer
