Error description

  • When a handler changes a top-level type or its attribute, a
protection violation will be set. JAX-RPC runtime will check
for any violationafter handler invocation and throw a
"WSWS3396E Handler Error: Protected state violation".

Local fix

  • Correct application code to avoid violations

When a handler changes a top-level type or its attribute, a
    protection violation will be set.
JAX-RPC runtime will check for any violation after handler
invocation and throws an error indicating "WSWS3396E Handler
Error: Protected state violation" if any violation is found.
This works as designed. In older versions of WebSphere
Application Server there was a defect in the violation
checking code where the violation was not found.

Problem conclusion

  • A new JVM custom property,
    com.ibm.websphere.jaxrpc.check.protection.violation.disabled,
was added to help customer preserve the old behavior. The
property value can be set as "true" or "false". When property
value is set to "true", protection violation checking is
skipped after handler invocation. The default value is not
set, which is equivalent to "false".
