APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When WAS.j2c trace is enabled and a sharable connection is
    used, you might see the following NPE in SystemErr.log.

    SystemErr     R   java.lang.NullPointerException
    SystemErr     R    at
    com.ibm.ejs.j2c.FreePool$Equals.run(FreePool.java:2739)

    And if you check the connection pool, "Total number of
    connections" will increase every time when the NPE is
    thrown although the total of in-use and free does not
    increase.

Local fix

  • disable WAS.j2c trace.

    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A connection leak issue can occur *
    * when using shared connections with *
    *                      WAS.j2c trace enabled.                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    With WAS.j2c trace enabled and shared connections being used,
    a NullPointerException can occur, causing the total number of
    connections to increase even though the total of in-use and
    free connections does not increase.

Problem conclusion

  • This was previously fixed in V8.0 and beyond to check for and
    properly handle the NullPointerException. This fix has been
    backported to V7.0.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 7.0.0.43. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
