Error description
IBM Installation Manager provides the option of installing corrective service (iFixes) as well as preventive service (fix packs). In fact, installing ALL such service in the repositor(ies) is the default when a customer issues an imcl install command and does not specify an exact offering version. Obviously, not all corrective service is distinct; an iFix may be reissued in an improved version; an iFix may incorporate another fix which it requires; or several changes (some in previous iFixes) may be merged into a single iFix. Unfortunately, Installation Manager does not handle this well, and issues misleading failure messages like the following: ERROR: Problems were found with the set of packages and fixes. ERROR: Problems were found with the packages and fixes in package group IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5. ERROR: Selected fixes contain each other and cannot be installed together. Fix 8.5.5.10-WS-WAS-IFPI62375 is contained by fix 8.5.5.10-WS-WAS-IFPI70737.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Installing two Interim Fixes with * * supersede relationships fails with * * Error: * * ERROR: Selected fixes contain * * each other and cannot be installed * * together. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When Installation Manager installs Offering and Interim Fixes together, its APAR dependency bundle checks the relationships of the Offerings and Interim Fixes. If it finds there are supersede relationships between two Interim Fixes, it will issue the Error. Such as ERROR: Problems were found with the packages and fixes in package group IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5. ERROR: Selected fixes contain each other and cannot be installed together. Fix 8.5.5.10-WS-WAS-IFPI62375 is contained by fix 8.5.5.10-WS-WAS-IFPI70737.
Problem conclusion
The fix is to update the APAR dependency bundle to skip the Error. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 8.0.0.14, 8.5.5.12 and 9.0.0.4.
