Error description

  • What is happening is that WebSphere makes a call to
getNetworkTimeout() during connection initialization, which is
an optional method per the JDBC specification. According to the
    JDBC specification, a SQLFeatureNotSupportedException is
supposed to be thrown if a JDBC driver does not support that
optional method. However, the OpenEdge JDBC Driver is throwing
a generic SQLException. Our code attempts to handle this
incorrect behavior by checking if the SQLException thrown
includes the text "not supported", however in this case the text
used is "not support". We can make an improvement to WebSphere
so that it will handle this JDBC driver behavior.

    * Driver a SQLException is thrown when *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When using the Progress DataDirect JDBC Driver a SQLException is
thrown indicating "This driver does not support the
'getNetworkTimeout' and 'setNetworkTimeout' methods." This is
because WebSphere makes a call to getNetworkTimeout during
connection initialization and expects the JDBC specification
defined SQLFeatureNotSupportedException to be thrown if a driver
does not support the optional getNetworkTimeout method.
Note that it is possible that a similar exception could be seen
with other JDBC drivers, which should also be resolved by the
    fix
    in this APAR.

Problem conclusion

  • An improvement was made in WebSphere Application Server to handl
the exception thrown by the Progress DataDirect JDBC Driver.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 9.0.0.8 for WebSphere Application Server and 18.0.0.2 f
WebSphere Liberty. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
