Error description
The following exception is seen in the SystemOut.log when a 401 response code is received during a call to a remote Application Server on WebSphere Application Server V6.1. This was reported on WebSphere Application Server V6.1.0.13 with the Feature Pack for Web Services V6.1.0.13 installed.
Local fix
Prevent the 401 error by doing the proper authentication
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of WebSphere Application Server * * Feature Pack for Web Services * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A StringIndexOutOfBoundsException might * * occur in the Feature Pack web * * services engine class, * * SOAPOverHTTPender. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** If a web services client receives a WWW-Authenticate HTTP header whose value is not enclosed in double quotation marks, a StringIndexOutOfBoundsException might occur in the com.ibm.ws.websvcs.transport.http.SOAPOverHTTPSender class. The Feature Pack web services engine assumed the value would always be quoted. For example: WWW-Authenticate: "Negotiate" However, that is not a correct assumption. Section 14.47 of the HTTP/1.1 specification does not mandate that the challenge text is quoted. A 3rd party web services provider, such as a provider running on .NET, might send this in a response message: WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate This is a valid header and the engine should accept it.
Problem conclusion
The Feature Pack web services engine no longer assumes that the WWW-Authenticate challenge value would be quoted. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 6.1.0.21.
