APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
If we set this in ISC (integrated solution console), server startup fails. -Xdump:system:none -Xdump:tool:events=gpf,exec="/usr/bin/gencore %pid core.%Y%m%d.%H%M%S.dmp" genericJvmArguments="-Xdump:system:none -Xdump:tool:events=gpf,exec="/usr/bin/gencore %pid core.%Y%m%d.%H%M%S.dmp""/>
Local fix
A file containing a list of options, specified using the -Xoptionsfile option on the command line. For example, java -Xoptionsfile=myoptionfile.txt MyClass In the options file, specify each option on a new line; you can use the \ character as a continuation character if you want a single option to span multiple lines. Use the # character to define comment lines. You cannot specify -classpath in an options file. Here is an example of an options file: #My options file -X<option1> -X<option2>=\ <value1>,\ <value2> -D<sysprop1>=<value1> I just tried the -Xoptionsfile option with followings options in my test environment. -Dtest1=abcd -Xdump:system:none -Xdump:tool:events=gpf,exec="/usr/bin/gencore%pidcore.%Y%m%d.%H% M%S.dmp" -Dtest2=abcd It recognized the values. But, as said in the doc when I used \ it was havinng some problem instead if I define the entire argument in a single it worked for me.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server users of * * version 6.1.0.x. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Blankspaces in genericJVMArgument * * fails to start the Server. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** JVM arguments with blank spaces in genericJVMArgument definition of a Server failed the server startup. During server startup the JVM argument with blankspace was misinterpreted as two JVM arguments, hence Java was not able to recognize it as a valid arguments, and it failed the server startup.
Problem conclusion
The JVM arguments with blankspaces should be defined within double quotes. The fix will treat the contents in the double quotes as a single argument and pass it on the same to Java as it defined. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fixpack 6.1.0.21.
