Error description

Creating an empty input, such as EMPTY_SOURCE, in the example
below, and then using that document as input to an XSL
Transform, fails in debug mode only.


DOMSource EMPTY_SOURCE = new

DOMSource(DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilde
r().newDocument());

...
t.transform(EMPTY_SOURCE, requestResult);

The scenario is valid. There is a document node in the
DOMSource, though that node does not have a document element.

A template rule like: <xsl:template match='/'>
will match that document node and one can write
a valid stylesheet.

In debug mode only, the XSLT will fail with messages such as
The XSLT debugger could not parse the XML document
[Fatal Error]  :-1:-1: Premature end of file.
SystemId Unknown;Line #-1; Column #-1; Premature end of file.

The XSLT debug engine parses the input document before sending
it in for transformation. The parsing algorithm does not
handle the empty input document, and causes the error.

The user will receive the following error message in the
console:
[Fatal Error]  :-1:-1: Premature end of file.
SystemId Unknown;Line #-1; Column #-1; Premature end of file.

Problem conclusion

Code has been changed to handle the empty input.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpacks 6.1.0.21 and 7.0.0.1.  Please refer to the Recommended
