PK71423: ESI CACHE PROCESSOR IN THE HTTP PLUGIN DOES NOT REUSE TCP CONNECTIONS.

Error description

Application Server returns esi:include tags to the HTTP plug-in
in IBM HTTP Server, which then invokes additional requests
back to Application Server for JavaServer Page (JSP)
fragments. All such requests open a new TCP connection and
include the "Connection: close" header which forces Application
Server to close the connection when done serving the request.
The Plug-in documentation states that the plug-in will reuse
existing connections to Application Server and never close
them until a close is initiated by Application Server.

The above behavior results in poor performance when using SSL
between The IBM Http Server and WebSphere Application Server.

Version affected is 6.1.0.13 of WebSphere Application Server
and the plug-in.

Local fix

Disabling the ESI cache in the WebSphere plug-in prevents
WebSphere from issuing ESI:include tags in its HTTP responses
and prevents the plug-in from creating new SSL connections back
to WebSphere for each jsp fragment.

Embedded ESI includes close an existing connection and opens a
new one for each child fragment.  This causes unnecessary TCP
overhead.

Problem conclusion

Code has been added to verify that an existing connection can
be used for embedded ESI fragments.  If such a connection
already exists, it is used for further requests.  If such a
connection does not exist, the normal connection setup and
open occurs.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpack 6.0.2.33 for WebSphere Application Server V6.0.2,
6.1.0.23 for WebSphere Application Server V6.1, and 7.0.0.3
for WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
