Error description

In the WebSphere Application Server v6.1 Administrative
Console, when a web server definition is created for an IBM
Http Server v6.1, the Process Definition has these settings by
default:

Executable name = cmd.exe

startCommand = cmd.exe

startCommandArgs =
/c
${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}/bin/apache.exe
-k
start
-n
IBMHTTPServer6.1
-f
${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}/conf/httpd.conf

stopCommand = cmd.exe

stopCommandArgs =
/c
${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}/bin/apache.exe
-k
stop
-n
IBMHTTPServer6.1
-f
${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}/conf/httpd.conf

With these default settings, when the administrator tries to
start or stop the web server, they get an error that says:

Windows Service name IBMHTTPServer6.1 on Node01/webserver1 Web
server could not be started (or stopped).

This problem happens only on Microsoft Windows operating
system, and is related to the use of the cmd.exe as the start
and stop commands.

Local fix

The work-around is to put the Apache.exe command into the
Executable name, and startCommand, and stopCommand as follows.

Change the web server Process Definition settings to this:

Executable name = Apache.exe

startCommand = ${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}\bin\Apache.exe

Problem summary

The command in the IBM HTTP Server ProcessDefs, "/c cmd.exe"
does not handle the IBM HTTP Server start and stop requests
when the IBM HTTP Server is installed to the default path
"c:\Program Files\IBM\HTTPServer". The problem is due to a
limitation or restriction with the use of quotes for the IBM
HTTP Server install path and IBM HTTP Server Configuration
file path. When the default install path and configuration
file path are used with the "/c cmd.exe" the leading and
ending Quotes are dropped and this causes an abbreviated
command to be executed, which result in start or stop failure.

Problem conclusion

The solution in this APAR was a code change to Web
server create.
The ProcessDef for the IBM HTTP Server has been changed at web
server create to use the direct execution of the command to
start or stop IBM HTTP Server,
${WEB_INSTALL_ROOT}/bin/apache.exe rather than "/c cmd.exe"

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpacks 6.1.0.23 and 7.0.0.3.  Please refer to the Recommended
