If application classloader policy is set to "classes loaded with
application class loader first" the following exception is
thrown java.lang.ClassCastException:
org.apache.openjpa.persistence.PersistenceProviderImpl
incompatible with
javax.persistence.spi.PersistenceProvider

The javax.persistence.Persistence class maintains a static
cache of PersistenceProviders. If an application uses the
Persistence class to create an EntityManagerFactory and then
restarts the application the cache in
javax.persistence.Persistence is not cleared out. The next
time an EntityManagerFactory is created a ClassCastException
occurs because the cached PersistenceProvider is "stale".

Problem conclusion

To resolve the probelm the Persistence class was replaced with
a version that does not maintain a static cache of Persistence
Providers. As a result there is no way for a "stale" instance
to be returned after the application is restarted.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpack 7.0.0.3.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
