Error description

When using message-driven beans (MDBs) with bean-managed
transactions driven by a WebSphere Application Server message
listener service in non-Application Server Facilities (non-ASF)
mode, messages are discarded if the bean's onMessage() method
throws an exception of type RuntimeException.

Local fix

The new code allows the commit of the message to be deferred
until the message has actually been processed successfully and
onMessage() has exited. If onMessage() cannot process the
message, the application server will roll it back onto the queue
that it originally came from where it will either be redelivered
or backed out.

When Non-Application Server Facilities (non-ASF) mode of the
message listener service is enabled, a non-transactional
session with automatic acknowledgment mode is used when
consuming messages from a destination for a message-driven
bean using bean-managed transactions.

This behavior means that the message is consumed from the
destination regardless of whether the bean successfully
processes the message. Although this is the behavior defined
in the EJB specification, this may not be the desired behavior
for all users.

Problem conclusion

This APAR introduces the following message listener service
custom property:
NON.ASF.BMT.ROLLBACK.ENABLED

When non-ASF mode is enabled and this custom property is set to
"true", the message listener service uses a non-transactional
session with client acknowledgment mode for message-driven
beans using bean-managed transactions. The message listener
service acknowledges a message after the onMessage() method of
the bean has returned successfully.
If a runtime exception is thrown by the bean, the message
listener service requests recovery of the message.

The default value is "false" which ensures that the
container behaves as specified by the EJB specification.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpack 6.1.0.23 and 7.0.0.3.
