Error description

WebSphere Application Server administration console displays an
error on the WS-Security message expiration bindings panel.

1. Navigate to Services > Policy sets > General provider policy
   set bindings
2. Click New
3. Type in a name in the Bindings configuration name field,
   such  as  "newBinding"
4. Click Add > WS-Security
5. Click Message expiration
6. Click the Apply button
7. A message will be displayed "The system could not set the
binding attributes for the WSSecurity policy type".

Local fix

This only occurs when creating a new binding.
1. Select the "Enable message expiration" checkbox on the
Message expiration panel
2. Enter a valid "Message timeout interval" value
3. Click Apply. This creates the binding.
4. Uncheck the "Enable message expiration" checkbox
5. Click Apply.  The error will not occur.

WebSphere Application Server version 7 administrative console
displays an error on the WS-Security message expiration
bindings panel.

1. Navigate to Services > Policy sets > General provider policy
   set bindings
2. Click New
3. Type in a name in the Bindings configuration name field,
   such  as  "newBinding"
4. Click Add > WS-Security
5. Click Message expiration
6. Click the Apply button
7. A message will be displayed "The system could not set the
   binding attributes for the WSSecurity policy type".

Problem conclusion

The message expiration binding panel does not have any values
set by default when the panel is initially displayed. The
"Enable message expiration" check box is unchecked. When
creating a new binding, before clicking Apply, there is no
existing configuration data.

If the user has not set any binding values, and clicks Apply
on the Message expiration panel, the setBinding task tries to
remove the message expiration property from the binding. This
binding does not exist yet, and causes the error. When this
condition is detected the property application.name will be
set to write the binding file and prevent the error.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpack 7.0.0.3.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
