Error description

The HTTP Server adds an extra CR (carriage Return - 0x0D)
character or LF (Line Feed) character when the header is empty
(that is, when it has no text after
the colon).
This is noticable when using
HtttpServletRequest.getHeader(String name) from the servlet to
retrieve the header.

Local fix

Using HtttpServletRequest.getHeaders(String name) from the
servlet will bypass the problem.

Problem summary

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: If a customer's client program or an    *
*                      exit program in the HTTP Server sends   *
*                      an empty request header, the plug-in    *
*                      forwards the header to WebSphere with   *
*                      an extra carriage return.               *

If the customer uses a special client or exit program to send
a request to the HTTP Server 5.3 for z/OS and the request
contains a header with a name and colon but no value, then
the plug-in forwards the header to WebSphere with an extra
carriage return character. The customer would see this extra
character when using HttpServletRequest.getHeader() in the
WebSphere application, but not when using
HttpServletRequest.getHeaders(). The problem does not appear
with the the other HTTP server for z/OS, IBM HTTP Server for
WebSphere Application Server.

Problem conclusion

PK78097 corrects the problem in the z/OS HTTP Server plug-in
by removing the extra carriage return.

APAR PK78097 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.25 of WebSphere Application Server V6.1
for z/OS.
