Error description

a JAVA exception: "Could not lock User prefs.lock file access
denied." could be seen when a WebSphere Application Server
administrative script such as, wsadmin or stopServer is used.

The above exception is not necessarily an indication of
functional failure.

Local fix

Use the CHGAUT i5/OS command to grant user profile 'QEJBSVR'
'*RWX' authority to the /home/<user>/.java IFS folder:

CHGAUT OBJ('/home/<user>/.java') USER(QEJBSVR) DTAAUT(*RWX)
SUBTREE(*ALL)

   Where <user> is the i5/OS logged on user profile.

   Please make sure that user profile QEJBSVR has lookup
authority (*X)  to the /home and /home/<user> folders.

On IBM i, all client scripts swap to use userProfile QEJBSVR
prior to executing the underlying application server java
class.

In Websphere Application Server v7, the IBM i 32bit J9 JDK will
create directories and files under the directory specified in
the java variable user.home, for the userProfile that was used
to call the websphere client script. QEJBSVR will not be
authorized to access nor create these directories and files
and the access exception will be thrown.

Problem conclusion

The exception thrown causes no functional failures.

To stop this behavior, a '-D' java parameter was added to the
product level setupCmdLine script located in the product's bin
directory, using a config action.

The parameter added was :
-Djava.util.prefs.userRoot=${HOME}/.qwas_client
This tells java to create the directories and files needed
under the new location of ${HOME}/.qwas_client instead of the
default location of ${HOME}.

Then before the swap to userProfile QEJBSVR is done, QEJBSVR
is granted sufficient authorities to avoid the exception.

After the java task has completed, userProfile QEJBSVR will
own all new files and directories created under the directory
${HOME}/.qwas_client. If the calling userProfile does not have
*ALLOBJ authority, it will not be able to access or manage
these new directories and files, even though they exist under
its ${HOME} directory. So before swapping back to the calling
userProfile, sufficient authorities are granted to the calling
userProfile to manage these new resources.


The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fixpack 7.0.0.3.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
