Error description

  • The JAXB API, javax.xml.bind.JAXBContext, controls the
marshaling and unmarshaling of XML data. The JAXBContext is
initialized with a series of package names of the user's JAXB
classes. If the user does not provide a complete list of
package names, the JAXBContext inspects the user's JAXB
classes to find the missing packages. In some cases this may
result in a java.lang.NullPointerException while using the
    JAXBContext to unmarshal XML data.

Local fix

  • The code to work around this problem is to take the XML and
Parse in the org.w3c.dom.Document before Unmarshalling.

    ****************************************************************
The JAXB API, javax.xml.bind.JAXBContext, controls the
marshaling and unmarshaling of XML data. The JAXBContext is
initialized with a series of package names of the user's JAXB
classes. If the user does not provide a complete list of
package names, the JAXBContext inspects the user's JAXB
classes to find the missing packages.

If a user does not provide a complete list of packages, the
following error may occur while using the JAXBContext to
    unmarshal XML data. Example:

    java.lang.NullPointerException
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.FCGDeserializationS
    tubGeneratorHelper.callJAXBFactory(FCGDeserializationStubGenerat
    orHelper.java:137)
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.ElementPropertyGene
    rator.callJAXBFactory(ElementPropertyGenerator.java:164)
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.TypedPropertyGenera
    tor.generate(TypedPropertyGenerator.java:226)
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.ElementPropertyGene
    rator.generate(ElementPropertyGenerator.java:42)
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.FCGDeserializationS
    tubGenerator.generateProperty1(FCGDeserializationStubGenerator.j
    ava:804)
           at
    com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.jaxb.unmarshal.codegen.fcg.FCGDeserializationS
    tubGenerator.generateProperties(FCGDeserializationStubGenerator.
    java:791)

The JAXBContext API is embedded with the JAX-WS runtime and
other stack software. It is possible that customers may
receive the above error even if they are not directly using
    JAXB.

Problem conclusion

  • The IBM implementation of the JAXBContext failed to
discover the missing JAXB classes in some rare cases. A
subsequent attempt to unmarshal XML failed with the
NullPointerException described in the Problem Summary.

The IBM implementation of the JAXBContext is corrected to find
the missing JAXB classes. The indicated NullPointerException
    error will no longer occur.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.5. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
