Error description

  • An incoming webservice message may contain xml elements that
    are defined as null. An example is inQName within the
    following message:

    -----------------------------------
    <s:Envelope xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/ 2005/08/addressing"
    xmlns:s="http:// schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    <s:Header />
    <s:Body>
    <RetQName xmlns="http://tempuri.org/">
    <q:inQName i:nil="true" xmlns:i=
    "http://www.w3.org/2001/ XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:q=
    "http://tempuri.org/" />
    </RetQName>
    </s:Body>
    </s:Envelope>
    ----------------------------------

    The JAX-WS engine that receives the message may fail with a
    NullPointerException error.  The NullPointerException will
    indicate the location where the exception occured. Here is an
    example from the FFDC log:

    An incoming webservice message may contain XML elements that
    are defined as null.
    An example is inQName within the following message:

    -----------------------------------
    <s:Envelope xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/ 2005/08/addressing"
    xmlns:s="http:// schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    <s:Header />
    <s:Body>
    <RetQName xmlns="http://tempuri.org/">
    <q:inQName i:nil="true" xmlns:i=
    "http://www.w3.org/2001/ XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:q=
    "http://tempuri.org/" />
    </RetQName>
    </s:Body>
    </s:Envelope>
    ----------------------------------

    A nil element, like inQName, is unmarshaled to a null Java
    object by the JAX-WS runtime. In some cases, the JAX-WS engine
    may fail with a NullPointerException. The root cause of the
    exception will indicate a problem in a class named
    PropertyDescriptorPlus. Here is an example exception:

    java.lang.NullPointerException
    at
    org.apache.axis2.jaxws.utility.PropertyDescriptorPlus.get(Proper
    tyDescriptorPlus.java:139)
    at
    org.apache.axis2.jaxws.wrapper.impl.JAXBWrapperToolImpl.unWrap(J
    AXBWrapperToolImpl.java:90)
    ... 29 more

    The webservice runtime class, PropertyDescriptorPlus, has an
    invalid check that is causing the NullPointerException.

Problem conclusion

  • The PropertyDescriptorPlus class was corrected to remove the
    invalid check. The NullPointerException will no longer occur,
    and the data will be unmarshaled correctly.
