PK83521: BBORBLOG ENDS WITH CC=8

Error description

BBORBLOG ends with CC=8 and the error log stream is not
completely printed. Many days worth of historical data is not
printed out.

The following messages are received:
BBOO0088E Program BBORBLOG encountered an error writing to file
associated with DD:BBOLOG.
BBOO0089E Program BBORBLOG terminated due to errors. Browse file
output may be truncated.

The generated output file contains unprintable characters in
the final line of output. One of the unprintable characters is
an EBCDIC SO character (0x0E). The last character of the last
line is an EBCDIC SI character 0x0F.  SO and SI characters are
supposed to delimit DBCS (double-byte) character strings.

BBORBLOG ends with CC=8 and the output data is truncated.
The following messages are observed:

BBOO0088E Program BBORBLOG encountered an error writing to file
associated with DD:BBOLOG.

BBOO0089E Program BBORBLOG terminated due to errors. Browse
file output may be truncated.

The final line of the output dataset is very long (as long as
the dataset's record length) and appears to contain several
logstream records in it.  The final line also contains
unprintable characters, specifically the "shift-out" character
(0x0E). The last character of the line is the corresponding
"shift-in" character (0x0F).

The shift-out and shift-in characters denote a segment of
Double Byte Character Stream (DBCS) data.   While in DBCS
mode, BBORBLOG fails to recognize the single-byte line-
termination character that delimits logstream records;
therefore BBORBLOG never ends the current line record. Once the
line length reaches the dataset's record length, BBORBLOG
writes out the current line, appends the shift-in character,
and then terminates with the errors noted above.

The problem is the presence of the 0x0E shift-out character
without a corresponding 0x0F shift-in character in the
logstream data.

Problem conclusion

BBORBLOG was updated to strip out all shift-out 0x0E characters
from the logstream data before writing to the output dataset.
This will prevent BBORBLOG from entering DBCS mode.  BBORBLOG
will always remain in single-byte character mode; thus it will
always be able to recognize the line-termination character and
delimit the logstream records appropriately.

APAR PK83521 is currently targeted for inclusion in
Service Level (Fix Pack) 6.0.2.37 of WebSphere
Application Server V6.0 for z/OS.
