reference. The same application starts fine on 6.1x.

The problem only occurs for a web module in a J2EE version 1.3
application when there are duplicate ref bindings (i.e.
<ejb-ref>, <resource-env-ref> or <resource-ref>).  The DTD
file ("http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd") for a Web
module specifically states that the ref bindings must have a
unique name field.  As such, a Web module which defines
duplicate ref bindings is technically a non-compliant
application. Although the DTD forbids a user from defining
duplicate ref bindings, WebSphere Application Server
code was not checking for the duplicates prior to version
7.0.0.  In version 7.0.0 code was added which checks for
duplicate ref bindings in a Web module and if found a
MetaDataException is caused.

Problem conclusion

As previously stated, it is illegal to define duplicate ref
bindings in a Web module.  However, since previous releases of
WebSphere Application Server tolerated the duplicates, this
APAR will continue to tolerate the duplicates when enabled.
The APAR code is enabled via a JVM system property as
described in the following procedure:

1. Open the administrative console.
2. Select Servers.
3. Select Application Servers.
4. Select the server you want to configure.
5. In the Server Infrastructure area, select Java and
Process Management.
6. In the Server Infrastructure area, select Process
Definition.
7. In the Additional Properties area, select Java Virtual
Machine.
8. In the Additional Properties area, select Custom
Properties.
9. Select the New box.
10. In the Name entry field, type
com.ibm.websphere.metadata.ignoreDuplicateRefBindingsInWebModul
es
11. In the Value entry field, type true. Entering true
enabled the code for this APAR which will tolerate the
duplicate ref bindings in a Web module.
12. Select OK and save changes.


The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for
inclusion in Service Levels (Fix Packs) 7.0.0.5 of WebSphere
Application Server versions 7.0.0.
