Error description

When a Servant region terminates while messages are inflight,
the inflight messages are not consumed after the servant region
restarts. This occurs when using a message-driven bean
application with bean-managed transactions, listening to a
default messaging provider (Service Integration Bus)
destination on z/OS.

Messages remain Locked on a bus destination, and are not
redelivered to the onMessage method of the message-driven
bean application on z/OS, after a servant region abends
or is cancelled, while the control region adjunct remains
running. The messages are only redelivered to the application
after the messaging engine (running in the control region
adjunct) is restarted.

The messages are not redelivered because the messaging engine
does not return the messages to the destination when
it is informed that the connection to it from the servant
region has been terminated.

The issue only occurs for applications using bean-managed
transactions, or specifying the NotSupported transaction
attribute on the onMessage method.
This is because it is only when a message has been allocated
to, and read by, a servant region outside of a transaction
that the messaging engine fails to unlock the message when a
servant region restarts.

Problem conclusion

The fix for this APAR causes the messaging engine to correctly
unlock messages on servant termination, when those messages
have been read by the servant outside of a transaction. This
causes the messages to be redelivered when another servant
region becomes available.

APAR PK87600 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.27 of WebSphere Application Server V6.1.
