Error description

  • -Application server process properly functioning has been killed
    (machine shutdown).

    -Application server tries to start but hangs

    SystemOut.log contains following error message

    [4/27/09 10:07:05:764 CEST] 0000002e WSCRecoveryWr E
    WTRN0040W: Object cannot be deserialized. The exception stack
    trace follows: org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM: vmcid: 0x0 minor

    com.ibm.ws.Transaction.JTA.WSCRecoveryData.<init>(WSCRecoveryDat

    .....

    The narrow() method throws a BAD_PARAM exception as the IDL
    string in WSCoordinatorHelper class fails to match the typeId in
    the IOR.
    ---------------------------------------
    IDL string in the WSCoordinatorHelper class is:
    IDL:com.ibm.ws.Transaction/JTS/WSCoordinator:1.0

    The trace statement depicting this is:

    ---------------------------------------
    IDL string or the typeId in the IOR is:
    IDL:JTS/WSCoordinator:1.0

    The trace statement depicting this is:

    -
    typeid= IDL:JTS/WSCoordinator:1.0
    ---------------------------------------

    Analysis reveals that the IOR contains the incorrect typeId. The
    IOR is constructed from the bytes passed in by the Application
    Server Configuration code:

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    * Server with combined versions v5 and v6 or *
    *                  higher                                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM Exception       *
    *                      occurs on a Server restart.             *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The problem arises when a transaction is started on a v5
    Server and passed to a v6 or higher Server. If the v6 or higher
    Server is restarted when it tries to do recovery the IDL from
    the v5 transaction does not contain the package name
    com.ibm.ws.Transaction so it fails.

Problem conclusion

  • The narrow call on the WSCoordinator which throws the
    org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM Exception has been replaced with
    an unchecked_narrow which does not have the strict requirement
    on the IDL.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 6.1.0.29 and 7.0.0.7. Please refer to the
