PK90497: SERVANT REGION DOES *NOT* ABEND ON A TRANSACTION TIMEOUT WTRN0006W / SEC3 / 04130005

Error description

When a Transaction timeout happens the associated Servant
region should be terminated with ABEND code SEC3 and
Reason code: 04130005. This behavior exists in V6.1 and before.
However in V7, this termination of the Servant region does
not happen.

The following messages in the Servant region will indicate that
a transaction has timed out:

A WTRN0124I message follows it to show the stack trace of the
thread at the time of the timeout.

The timeout period is determined by the following variable:
transaction_defaultTimeout: 120

The servant region processing a global transaction is not
terminated after having experienced a prolonged hang condition.
For this scenario to take place, the global transaction being
processed must be confined to a single application server.
Note that when the hang condition is experienced, the
transaction times out as expected; therefore, preventing any
further work from taking place under that transaction.

Problem conclusion

Code was added to align the servant region termination behavior
to prior WAS on z/OS releases in order to free resources that
the transaction involved in the hang may have held.
The Servant Region hosting the transaction in question will be
terminated with ABEND code EC3 and Reason code: 04130005 after
the documented grace period, which start after the transaction
times out.

APAR PK90497 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.7 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
