Error description

The JAX-WS engine reads and sends attachments.  Attachments
may be very large, and the engine may need to store the
attachment data on the file system.

An administrator should have control over the threshold size
that determines when an attachment is stored on the file system.

The JAX-WS engine reads an internal threshold value to
determine if it will write an attachment file to memory or
cache it to disk. Caching attachments to disk saves memory and
therefore allows the web service engine to send and receive
large messages.

However, users need a way to configure that threshold so that
they have finer control over the file caching behavior.

Problem conclusion

This fix allows users to set the
com.ibm.ws.websvcs.attachments.sizeThreshold JVM property
on the JAX-WS client or service to a threshold value in bytes.

If an attachment's size is below the property's value, then
the JAX-WS engine writes the attachment to memory. If the
attachment's size exceeds the value, then the engine caches the
attachment to a file on the disk.

The com.ibm.ws.websvcs.attachments.sizeThreshold property
property is comparable to the
com.ibm.websphere.webservices.attachements.maxMemCacheSize
used by the JAX-RPC engine.  The default value is "102400".
That means that by default, an attachment whose size exceeds
102400 bytes (100K) will be cached to the file system.

Users must be aware of the potential performance impact when
setting this property.

The JAX-WS engine was fixed to expose the "sizeThreshold"
property to users.

This same problem occurs in the WebSphere Application Server
Feature Pack for Web Services, and it is fixed by PK93781.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.9.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
