APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
When a client uses SSL (https) HTTP Tunneling to access a remote EJB, the getHostIPAddress() method is invoked to resolve the remote server hostname. This results in the following exception because the remote host is not known nor reachable from the client... 10:33:26.654 com.ibm.ws.orbimpl.transport.WSTransport getHostIPAddress:113 P=205545:O=0:CT ORBRas[default] java.net.UnknownHostException: myhost.com at java.net.InetAddress.getAllByName0(InetAddress.java:1168) at java.net.InetAddress.getAllByName0(InetAddress.java:1133) at java.net.InetAddress.getAllByName(InetAddress.java:1096) at java.net.InetAddress.getByName(InetAddress.java:993) at com.ibm.CORBA.transport.TransportBase.getHostIPAddress(Transport Base.java:109) at com.ibm.rmi.iiop.TransportManager.getHostIPAddress(TransportMana ger.java:184) at com.ibm.rmi.Profile.getHostIPAddress(Profile.java:471) at com.ibm.ISecurityLocalObjectBaseL13Impl.SecurityConnectionInterc eptor.getHostfromProfile(SecurityConnectionInterceptor.java:2980 ) at com.ibm.ISecurityLocalObjectBaseL13Impl.SecurityConnectionInterc eptor.getConnectionKeyForLocateRequest(SecurityConnectionInterce ptor.java:1610) at com.ibm.ISecurityLocalObjectBaseL13Impl.SecurityConnectionInterc eptor.getConnectionKey(SecurityConnectionInterceptor.java:1440) at com.ibm.ws.orbimpl.transport.WSTransport.getConnection(WSTranspo rt.java:286) at com.ibm.CORBA.transport.TransportBase.getConnection(TransportBas e.java:163) The problem does not occur if non-SSL (http) HTTP Tunneling is used.
Local fix
Add the remote servers' hostname and ipaddress to the etc/hosts file on the client machine
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Excessive trace files are * * generated when a thin client uses * * HTTP Tunneling to access a remote EJB * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When a client uses SSL (https) HTTP Tunneling to access a remote EJB, the getHostIPAddress() method is invoked to resolve the remote server hostname. This results in the exception, which is in Error Description field, is logged to a current directory as a ORB log data no matter how trace option is set, because the remote host is not known nor reachable from the client. As a result, a client may have excessive ORB log files which will consume hard disk space.
Problem conclusion
With this fix, the code no longer invokes getHostIPAddress method when HTTP tunneling is used. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 6.1.0.31 and 7.0.0.9.
