Error description
During application deployment, a NullPointerException may be thrown from CacheDeployUtils while removing the cache directory. This is an intermittent problem. Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server and JAX-WS Web Services * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Application deployment fails with a * * NullPointerException thrown from * * CacheDeployUtils * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fixpack containing this APAR. * **************************************************************** The following exception might be thrown from from CacheDeployUtils while removing the webservices cache directory. The callstack below is seen in the SystemErr.log file. [8/11/09 15:49:16:659 EDT] 000000bf SystemErr R java.lang.NullPointerException [8/11/09 15:49:16:659 EDT] 000000bf SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.websvcs.deploy.CacheDeployUtils.removeDirectory(Cache DeployUtils.java:49) [8/11/09 15:49:16:659 EDT] 000000bf SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.websvcs.deploy.CacheDeployUtils.removeDirectory(Cache DeployUtils.java:51) .... This intermittent error is most likely to occur when multiple threads are causing the webservices cache to be removed at the same time.
Problem conclusion
The problem occurs due to a timing issue involving 2 threads simultaneously trying to delete the same cache directory structure in the file system. The code was structured such that it called File.listFiles() twice and implicitly expected the same result. The code is corrected to make a single call to File.listFiles() to avoid the timing issue. APAR PK94048 fixes this same problem for the WebSphere Application Server V6.1 Feature Pack for Web Services. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.9.
