Error description

  • After migrating from WebSphere Application Server v5.1 (BASE
    edition) to WebSphere Application Server v7.0 (BASE edition), an
    application which worked in V5.1 throws JSPG0049E error
    in V7.0.
    Systemout.log shows the following exception:

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server version *
    * 7.0 users of JavaServer Pages (JSP) *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A JSP standard action include to a *
    * resource which is declared as an *
    * Object type might fail to compile in *
    *                      WebSphere Application Server V7.0.      *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When dynamically including a resource with parameters in a
    JSP, the JSP fails to compile if the resource is declared as
    an Object type.

    For example: the following JSP code snippet:

    <%! Object jspName = "sample.jsp"; %>
    <jsp:include page="<%= jspName %>">
        <jsp:param value="value1" name="param1"/>
    </jsp:include>

    is translated to:

    org.apache.jasper.runtime.JspRuntimeLibrary.include(request,
    response, (String) jspName  +   ((jspName).indexOf('?')>0?
    '&': '?') +
    org.apache.jasper.runtime.JspRuntimeLibrary.URLEncode("param1",
    request.getCharacterEncoding()) + "=" +
    org.apache.jasper.runtime.JspRuntimeLibrary.URLEncode("value1",
     request.getCharacterEncoding()), out, false);

    During the compilation time, this results in an error with
    the following message:

    "The method indexOf(char) is undefined for the type Object"
    The indexOf() method is not defined for the Object type
    variable "jspName".

Problem conclusion

  • The JSP engine code was modified to explicitly type cast the
    Object reference into a String reference before accessing the
    indexOf() method during the translation phase.

    In order to enable the behavior provided by this APAR, either
    a JSPAttribute "useStringCast" is set in the ibm-web-ext.xmi
    file which would affect only the application for which the
    property is set, or a WebContainer custom property
    (com.ibm.wsspi.jsp.useStringCast = true) which would affect
    all the deployed applications

    Note: the "useStringCast" attribute or Webcontainer custom
    property was introduced in PK20187. However, it did not
    cover a scenario where JSP parameter is included in the
    dispatch.

    Please refer to the following technote for instructions on
    enabling WebContainer custom properties:
    http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rss=180&uid=swg21284395

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 7.0.0.9
