Error description
When making an HTTP ?wsdl request in the browser for a JAX-RPC web service, the following NullPointerException might occur: [1/8/10 14:25:29:031 CET] 00000025 ServletWrappe E SRVE0068E: Could not invoke the service() method on servlet HelloWorld. Exception thrown : java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServlet. processWsdlRequest(WebServicesServlet.java:302) at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServlet. doGet(WebServicesServlet.java:606) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:743) at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServletB ase.service(WebServicesServletBase.java:341) ... Normally, ?wsdl requests result in the contents of the WSDL displayed to the browser, but in this case, nothing is shown. This might happen if the application was installed with the "Use Binary Configuration" option enabled in the administrative console; the comparable wsadmin flag is useMetaDataFromBinary.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server users of * * JAX-RPC EJB applications * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: If a JAX-RPC application is installed * * with the "Use Binary Configuration" * * option, ?wsdl requests may fail * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fixpack that contains this APAR. * **************************************************************** When making a ?wsdl request in the web browser for a JAX-RPC EJB web service, the following NullPointerException error may occur: [1/8/10 14:25:29:031 CET] 00000025 ServletWrappe E SRVE0068E: Could not invoke the service() method on servlet HelloWorld. Exception thrown : java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServlet. processWsdlRequest(WebServicesServlet.java:302) at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServlet. doGet(WebServicesServlet.java:606) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:743) at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.transport.http.WebServicesServletB ase.service(WebServicesServletBase.java:341) ... A ?wsdl request should result in the contents of the WSDL being displayed in the browser. However, in this case, nothing is displayed. This might happen if the application was installed with the "Use Binary Configuration" option enabled, if using the administrative console. The comparable option when installing with the wsadmin tool is useMetaDataFromBinary. Note that this problem is limited to JAX-RPC web services in EJB's. If the web service is in a Web application, even if the "Use Binary Configuration" option was enabled, the ?wsdl request would not result in the NullPointerException error. More information about these two installation options can be found in the Information Center for your WebSphere version and operating system. For information on the "Use Binary Configuration" option, see the "Select installation options settings" article. For information on the useMetaDataFromBinary option, see the "Options for the AdminApp object install, installInteractive, edit, editInteractive, update, and updateInteractive commands" article.
Problem conclusion
The NullPointerException occurs because the JAX-RPC runtime could not resolve the WSDL on the file system. With this APAR, the JAX-RPC runtime will use the contents of the WSDL packaged in the EJB to create a temporary WSDL for serving ?wsdl requests. The temporary file is deleted when the ?wsdl request finishes. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 6.0.2.41, 6.1.0.31, and 7.0.0.11.
