Error description

  • JspApplicationContext.addELResolver() in a servlet is not
    throwing an IllegalStateException. Where as an
    IllegalStateException should be thrown if an attempt is made to
    call this method after all ServletContextListeners have had
    their contextInitialized methods invoked.

    Note: This failure only occurs when the addELResolver method is
    called in a servlet and works fine in a JSP.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: JspApplicationContext.addELResolver()   *
    * in a servlet is not throwing an *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    According to the JSP specification for addELResolver(): it is
    illegal to register an ELResolver after the application has
    received a request from the client. If an attempt is made to
    register an ELResolver after that time, an
    IllegalStateException is thrown.

    However, in the WebSphere Application Server servlet engine
    implementation, registration of an ELResolver from a servlet
    or a filter is allowed after the application has received a
    request from the client. Note: This is not a problem if
    addELResolver() is called in a JavaServer Page (JSP).

Problem conclusion

  • The WebContainer and JSP containers have been modified to
    throw an IllegalStateException if an attempt is made to
    register an ELResolver after the application has received a
    request from the client.
    The new webcontainer custom property will be required to be set
    to enable the new behavior

    com.ibm.ws.jsp.throwExceptionForAddELResolver = true (default
    = false)

    Please refer to the following technote for instructions on
    enabling WebContainer custom properties:

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 7.0.0.11. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
