Error description
An attachment part in a JAX-RPC Web service's outbound message is truncated. This happened while using a java.io.InputStream in a javax.activation.DataHandler. The content-type for the truncated attachment is "text/plain". The following trace statements in the log file of the JAX-RPC Web service that sent the message reveal that a problem occurred: [4/22/10 10:51:53:768 MDT] 0000006f MimeMultipart 1 com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.attachments.MimeMultipartWriterUti l writeToSilent The following exception was caught and ignored: java.io.IOException: "text/plain" DataContentHandler requires String object, was given object of type class java.io.ByteArrayInputStream at com.sun.mail.handlers.text_plain.writeTo(text_plain.java:140) at javax.activation.ObjectDataContentHandler.writeTo(DataHandler.ja va:839)

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server users of * * JAX-RPC and "text/plain" attachments * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An attachment part in a JAX-RPC Web * * service's outbound message is * * truncated. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fixpack containing this APAR. * **************************************************************** An attachment part in a JAX-RPC Web service's outbound message is truncated. This happened while using a java.io.InputStream in a javax.activation.DataHandler. The content-type for the truncated attachment is "text/plain". The following trace statements in the log file of the JAX-RPC Web service that sent the message reveal that a problem occurred: [4/22/10 10:51:53:768 MDT] 0000006f MimeMultipart 1 com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.attachments.MimeMultipartWriterUti l writeToSilent The following exception was caught and ignored: java.io.IOException: "text/plain" DataContentHandler requires String object, was given object of type class java.io.ByteArrayInputStream at com.sun.mail.handlers.text_plain.writeTo(text_plain.java:140) at javax.activation.ObjectDataContentHandler.writeTo(DataHandler.ja va:839) The error message indicates that the customer tried to represent a "text/plain" attachment as an InputStream instead of String.
Problem conclusion
The JAX-RPC runtime is changed to detect the InputStream usage in a "text/plain" message. The InputStream object is transformed into the expected String object. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 6.0.2.43, 6.1.0.33, and 7.0.0.13.
