Error description
When a field is declared as xs:hexBinary in a JAXB class, the JAXB Unmarshaller may fail to parse values for this field, either resulting in loss of data or an incorrect value returned.
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All IBM WebSphere Application Server V7.0 * * users of JAXB and JAX-WS. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The JAXB runtime sometimes loses * * xs:hexBinary values or unmarshals * * them incorrectly. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fix pack that contains this APAR. * **************************************************************** When an application's JAXB classes contain fields whose schema type is xs:hexBinary, the JAXB Unmarshaller may interpret those fields as being xs:base64Binary, resulting in loss of data or an incorrect value returned.
Problem conclusion
In JAXB the xs:hexBinary type is expressed as an annotation @XmlJavaTypeAdapter(HexBinaryAdapter.class). The IBM JAXB runtime was failing to read this annotation when it appears on the create*() methods of the ObjectFactory and was mistakenly mapping the property to xs:base64Binary (the default binding when there is no @XmlJavaTypeAdapter). With the wrong type information, the Unmarshaller would either fail to parse values into a byte[] or produce the wrong value. The problem was resolved by correcting the processing logic for ObjectFactory classes, ensuring that any @XmlJavaTypeAdapter annotations on the create*() methods be taken into account when determining the schema type of a property. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.13.
