Error description
This APAR addresses a new feature added to Websphere Application Server, to support the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) "outbound" protocol extension, as described in RFC 5626.
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) users * * of IBM WebSphere Application Server V7.0 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Connectivity issues against clients * * that reside behind a Network Address * * Translator or a firewall. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Some connectivity problems in SIP relate to clients that reside behind a NAT (Network Address Translator) or a firewall. Typically, such networks allow clients to send messages to the server, but prevent the server from sending messages back to the client. These problems, and their standardized solutions, are described in RFC 3581 - "An Extension to the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for Symmetric Response Routing", and RFC 5626 - "Managing Client-Initiated Connections in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)".
Problem conclusion
The problem is fixed by implementing RFC 5626 ("outbound") and RFC 3581 ("rport"). With this new feature, the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) container supports the "outbound" and "rport" protocol extensions at the server side. Clients that reside behind a NAT (Network Address Translator) or a firewall, will be able to traverse the firewall and communicate with the server, by implementing the same protocol extensions at the client side. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.15.
