Error description

  • Example of Problem: Application tried to display DBCS character
    ("ABC") in SYSPRINT of joblog by using a following method;
    System.out.println(" テAテBテC ");
    The last three lines in the joblog should show 'ABC' in
    DBCS character.
    However, these were not displayed correctly.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V7.0 and V8.0                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: WebSphere Application Server for z/OS *
    *                      Servant region version 7.0 prints       *
    * Japanese DBCS characters from *
    *                      System.out and System.err messages      *
    * to JOBLOG in EBCDIC. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The message displayed by a user application using System.out
    and System.err are converted from ASCII to EBCDIC in the
    native code. When the message includes DBCS characters, they
    are inappropriately converted to EBCDIC.

Problem conclusion

  • The messages from the user application are converted to the
    customer specified encoding.If no encoding schema is
    specified, the default of EBCDIC is used.

    APAR PM32110 requires changes to documentation.

    NOTE: Periodically, we refresh the documentation on our
    Web site, so the changes might have been made before you
    read this text. To access the latest on-line
    documentation, go to the product library page at:

    http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/library

    The following changes to the z/OS version of the WebSphere
    Application Server Version 7.0 Information Center will be
    made available in September, 2011.

    The topic "Java Virtual Machine custom properties" will be
    updated to include the following description of the new
    com.ibm.ws390.SystemOutErrCodepage custom property:

    com.ibm.ws390.SystemOutErrCodepage

    Use this custom property to specify an encoding schema
    for messages issued using System.out and System.err with
    the println, print and write methods other than EBCDIC.
    If no encoding schema is specified, EBCDIC, which is the
    default encoding schema, is used for these messages.

    The value specified for this property must be in string
    format.

    If you decide to use this custom property, you must specify
    it as a JVM custom property for the servant.

    APAR PM32110 is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.19 and 8.0.0.1 of WebSphere
    Application Server.
