PM32856: ADJUNCT REGION TERMINATES WITH ABEND SCC3 RSN=040E0002. JVM REPORT JAVA/LANG/OUTOFMEMORYERROR DURING PTHREAD

Error description

An Adjunct address space terminates with SCC3 ABENDSCC3 reason
code RSN040E0002.

The Adjunct's SYSOUT contains messages suggesting an out of
memory condition has occurred, but analysis of the doc shows
that the failure is actually caused when pthread_create()
attempts to generate a new thread, and fails with ERRNO set to
EAGAIN.  EAGAIN was returned because this Adjunct process is in
the middle of quiescing due to the SCC3 Abend.  To be clear,
there is not a true memory shortage in this dump.

BBOCJFAP in the Adjunct has space switched to thet controller to
schedule an SRB into a servant region which is currently in the
middle of termination.  The SRB is scheduled OK but the servant
continues to terminate and the SRB encounters an S0C4-10
accessing a cell pool which has gotten cleaned up (released) as
part of termination.

WebSphere Application Server for z/OS adjunct process has
space switched to the controller to schedule an SRB into a
servant region which is currently in the middle of termination.
The SRB is scheduled but abends in IGVCPOOL when attempting to
get a cell from a private area cpool that has already been
cleaned up. Recovery routines handle the abend in IGVCPOOL
which returns to the routine that scheduled the SRB indicating
that the SRB had an error. The WebSphere Application Server for
z/OS routine that scheduled the SRB then issues a ABENDSCC3
reason code 040E0002 which causes the adjunct process to
terminate.

Problem conclusion

The code has been changed to return with a bad return and
reason code instead of abending when the schedule of the SRB
fails.

APAR PM32856 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.39 of WebSphere Application Server V6.1.
