Error description
Workload Management SIBus Messaging Engine startup and shutdown performance enhancement
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of IBM WebSphere Process Server or * * users of IBM WebSphere Application Server * * with many SCA Modules or a SIBus topology * * with a Messaging Engine (ME) containing * * many destinations * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Workload Management (WLM) SIBus * * Messaging Engine startup and shutdown * * performance enhancement * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Users of WebSphere Process Server with many Service Component Architecture (SCA) Modules or users of a SIBus topology with a Messaging Engine containing thousands of destinations may find that their Messaging Engines take a long time to start up and shut down, and that as the number of destinations or SCA Modules, which implicitly create destinations, is increased, the startup time will grow in an exponential fashion.
Problem conclusion
This APAR provides a scaling enhancement change within the WLM data propagation mechanisms in these scenarios to reduce the algorithmic complexity from exponential down to linear as well as reducing the overall amount of data which needs to be propagated during an ME start or stop scenario. In order to enable and use either of the custom properties, you must take the following steps: In the administrative console click on "System Administration" on the left side, click on "Cell" underneath that, then click on "Custom Properties" in the middle frame. You'll want to create a new custom property with the name: IBM_CLUSTER_ENABLE_CAR_DELAY_POSTING and a value of true. Note that this performance enhancement should be used in conjunction with a prior enhancement contained in the 6.1.0.23 and 7.0.0.3 fixpacks which enabled in a similar fashion but with the custom property: IBM_CLUSTER_ENABLE_ACS_DELAY_POSTING With the combination of these two properties being enabled, it is possible to see a reduction in the time it takes a Messagine Engine failover event to occur (the stop of one ME and the start of another) of 95% or more depending on how many destinations are configured. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 6.1.0.39 and 7.0.0.17 Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for delivery information: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg27004980
