Error description

  • During migration, a java.lang.StackOverflowError occurs during
    syncNode operation (in the WASPostUpgrade step) as the
    transformer tries to resolve variable JAVA_HOME.

    The stacktrace might look like the following when obtaining the
    syncNode.log file:

    BBOJ0059I: Transforming:
    /WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/default/config/cells/cellname

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The JAVA_HOME variable is incorrectly *
    *                      migrated, causing a                     *
    *                      StackOverflowError exception during     *
    *                      WASPostUpgrade.                         *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The JAVA_HOME variable at the server level is set to
    ${JAVA_HOME} during migration. The first time this variable is
    accessed, it causes a StackOverflowError trying to resolve the
    value.

Problem conclusion

  • The code has been fixed to not set JAVA_HOME=${JAVA_HOME}
    during migration.

    APAR PM44024 is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Level (Fix Pack) of WebSphere
    Application Server  7.0.0.21 and 8.0.0.2.
