Error description

• Calling ExpressionFactory.coerceToType can modify the object
  value when both object types passed in are
  java.math.BigDecimal in WebSphere Application Server version 7.

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The EL code is incorrectly coercing     *
  *                      java.math.BigDecimal and                *
  *                      java.math.BigInteger values.            *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *

  When the EL code coerces an object to the same object type it
  can result in the value of the object being modified.  This
  issue occurs when the object type is either
  java.math.BigDecimal or java.math.BigInteger.
  The following example illustrates the issue:
  BigDecimal testValue = new BigDecimal("1000.000");
  ExpressionFactory testExpressionFactory = new
  org.apache.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl();
  Object testCoerced =
  testExpressionFactory.coerceToType(testValue,
  testValue.getClass());
  The value of testCoerced is now 1000 instead of 1000.000.
  Since both object types passed in to the coerceToType method
  are java.math.BigDecimal, there should be no coercion
  performed.
  

Problem conclusion

• The EL code was modified to perform no type coercion when the
  object is already of the expected type.
  
  The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
  fix pack 7.0.0.21.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
